Product Designer, Military

Portland, ME

At ForeFlight we know you want a rewarding career. To do that, you need challenging projects, a good work environment, and awesome coworkers. We believe in our employees, and we empower them to make a direct impact on our products and messaging. Because we understand what our staff need, we have a low turn-around rate, our employees become brand ambassadors, and we are recognized as a premier leader in the aviation industry.

Job Description

ForeFlight is looking for an outstanding Product Designer to join our military flight bag team. This position is for a motivated individual well-versed in iOS as well as desktop and mobile web application design, who has a background in or passion for aviation.

This person will be a core member of our design team and will help us create the next generation of ForeFlight products.

We’re looking for someone who has a background in or passion for aviation (huge bonus points for a Pilot’s License) and an impressive portfolio of iOS and optionally web projects. A keen eye for detail is a must. We’re looking for someone who, given the realities of designing for the (often harsh) cockpit environment, can produce cutting edge interfaces that take into account the realities of glare, turbulence, and low light conditions.

A solid understanding of iOS design best practices, including knowledge of Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines, is required. The ideal candidate is strong in both User Interface as well as User Experience design. Product Designers at ForeFlight work on every phase of the design process from requirements gathering to persona development, wireframing to high fidelity mockups, and prototyping to user testing. Although we’re not looking for someone proficient in Objective-C, the ideal candidate is familiar with the basics of iOS UI implementation. Similarly, for candidates with experience designing for the web, a knowledge of web standards and modern HTML/CSS/JS best practices is preferred.

Professionally, this person is driven to execute, deliver, and complete projects independently, seeking advice and direction from team members when needed, and plowing ahead to completion when the path forward is clear. This person will be able to point to specific examples that highlight the individual’s ability to meet the objectives outlined above, and references will confirm this person’s unique abilities.

This position is for someone based in our Portland, ME office. A pilot-designer, or individual looking to pursue his or her private pilot license, is a huge plus. Benefits include medical insurance, 401K with matching, and flight training reimbursement.  Relocation reimbursement will be provided for the right candidate.

Experience and Skills Requirements

  • A killer portfolio
  • Solid understanding of iOS and web design principles
  • Experience or general interest in aviation
  • Experience with Sketch and/or Photoshop
  • For web design candidates, knowledge of responsive design best practices
  • Experience with PaintCode not necessary, but a huge plus.
  • Experience with Git not necessary, but nice to have.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience.
  • Generous health and dental benefits.
  • 401(k) matching with immediate vesting.
  • Flight training reimbursement.
