VIDEO: Getting Started with ForeFlight

This 6.5-minute video walks you through the essential first steps to getting started with ForeFlight.

NOTE: If you haven't started a 30-day free trial with worldwide Jeppesen chart coverages, be sure to check Step 2A below for instructions on how to link your existing Jeppesen charts in place of the trial's worldwide coverage.

VIDEO: Viewing Jeppesen Plates in ForeFlight

See how easy it is to view and organize your Jeppesen procedure plates and Airway Manuals in ForeFlight with this short tutorial video. ForeFlight's Flight Binders feature was directly inspired by JeppFD's tab layout, so transitioning customers will find a familiar interface in ForeFlight with some notable improvements.

STEP 1: Download ForeFlight & Log In

Search for “ForeFlight” in the Apple App Store and install the app named “ForeFlight Mobile EFB”.

After opening the app for the first time, tap “I Have An Account” and enter the email and password you used to start your trial. Agree to the End User License Agreement and allow ForeFlight to access your GPS position, send you push notifications, and access devices on your local network (required for connecting to nearby devices like portable ADS-B receivers and flight simulators).

STEP 2A: Transfer Your Jeppesen Charts from JeppFD to ForeFlight

NOTE: This step is only required if you haven't started the 30-day free trial of ForeFlight with worldwide Jeppesen coverages, or if your trial has expired and you've purchased a subscription.

Tap More in the bottom-right corner and tap Jeppesen near the bottom of the list. Tap Sign In, then enter your Jeppesen username and password to link your Jeppesen account with ForeFlight. Tap Install Coverage on the following page and select from the available chart coverages. (Note: If no seats are available for your coverage then you may need to deactivate your charts in Mobile FliteDeck. Check out the video below to see how.) ForeFlight will start downloading your charts right away, and you can follow the progress by tapping Manage All Jeppesen Downloads to open the Downloads view.

Deactivate Jeppesen Coverages in JeppFD

Open the Apple Settings app and scroll down the left-hand bar until you reach the list of installed apps. Tap JeppFD and scroll to the very bottom of the settings list. Tap Deactivate at the bottom. Now leave the Settings app and open JeppFD. It should display a message asking you to confirm the deactivation. Tap Proceed to confirm.

You can now return to ForeFlight and go to More > Jeppesen to activate the newly free coverage.

STEP 2B: Configure Other Downloads

The set of global Jeppesen charts included with your free trial will begin downloading automatically along with other required downloads soon after you open ForeFlight for the first time. You can monitor the progress of these downloads in the Jeppesen section near the top of More > Downloads. The full set is split into separate download items for Enroute Charts and Terminal Charts; if you see duplicates of either one it is due to an upcoming chart cycle cutover.

Both of these downloads are quite large (over 1.5GB combined), so depending on your Wi-Fi speed they may take a while to download. You do not have to keep ForeFlight open for the downloads to complete, but we do recommend you connect your iPad or iPhone to a power source to prevent any disruption of the download progress.

Additionally, ForeFlight provides a rich collection of resources from the FAA, NAV CANADA, or EUROCONTROL (based on your location), so feel free to download these as supplements to your Jeppesen charts, which are still the default for all charts. Tap into your region’s (US/Canada/Europe) Download Settings menu at the top of the Downloads view to select additional charts and data types. Enable the chart/data types at the top and select the states/provinces/countries below, then tap back to download your selections. Once complete, all the data you selected will be available for offline use during a flight.

STEP 3: Set Up Aircraft Profiles

Adding Aircraft Profiles for the aircraft you plan to fly is essential so that ForeFlight can properly calculate performance information, file flight plans, and more. Go to More > Aircraft and tap the Plus button in the top right to start a new profile. Move down the list and add basic details like aircraft registration, aircraft type, color, and others. Tap Performance Profiles to view the built-in profiles for your aircraft type, if supported. Tap on the one you plan to use most often and tap Make Default at the bottom to automatically use that profile when planning future flights.

Move down the page and confirm that the auto-populated Altitudes, Weights, and Fuel details match your own aircraft, then specify your aircraft’s ICAO filing codes so you can file flight plans right from ForeFlight. After you've filled in the essential fields, tap Make Default at the bottom of the page to set the new aircraft profile as your default for flight planning.
